Bought the tool to remove 4 bushings that were installed with red loctite in a steel frame 1911.Used a soldering iron with a point directly on the grip screw that the tool attached with.Kept one hand on the frame next to the tool to detect heat. when I could feel the frame warming up I removed the soldering iron and the old bushings backed out. The entire process took less than 20 minutes. I got some very good advice from Bryan with Challis.
bought both tools needed both and they are a perfect fit and will work about all the time ,you cannot find a better company to do business with, you will not find a better tool than cjhallis makes ,this goes for their bushings and grip screws and grips also .I believe they are the absolute best when you need some stuff for your 1911 pistols I was left 47 colts ,all o model .45 cap's I got twenty Kimber ,and every other quality including Wilson combat and some vcabot pistols also the Challis tools and bushings fit each and every one of them, why anu body would buy from any other business escapes me totally as Challis has the best of everything for every 1911 style pistol made for the last 100 years .I hope in the future that they mahe some parts for the pythons and other colt pistols my family left me ,there are many and every variety is included ,1911's being my fav . pythons and single action first editions second fav.and some anacondas and other snake revolvers also being held dear at my place.
Purchased new Colt LC with thin grip set. I wanted to remove ultra slim bushings, .032 proud and install standard grip bushings .170 proud for thicker grips. I contacted Challis Grips/Brian and he suggested that he modify a thin grip extractor. I received the Challis modified extractor, 4 HEX standard grip bushings with orings. The removal of each ultra slim bushing took minutes and were perfectly removed from the aluminum frame. The HEX bushings installed quite easily. The extractor and the bushings are of exceptional design and foremost quality. I am a helicopter pilot/A&P mechanic, I make my living depending on quality hardware and Challis Grips manufactures a superior, American product.
Like the first reviewer, I too called Brian for a modified slim bushing removal tool and had great success. Brian modified the tool for "ultra" slim bushings (as used by Colt on the Wiley Clapp Commander - aluminum frame). The tool worked like a charm and while I was nervous about the small purchase allowed by the bushings, I went slow and gentle and the tool removed them easily. The bushings appeared to have a minor amount of some type of sealant but were not staked in. This is the best bushing removal tool ever! I highly recommend this product. I then installed some hex drive bushings and they worked out wonderful too! Couldn't be happier!
Talked to Brian and had him customize the extractor to fit the Colt ultra thin bushings. Worked like a charm. Thank you
